How to Sleep With a Noisy Radiator or Clanking Pipes

Heating makes noise for ordinary mechanical reasons. Metal expands as it warms and contracts as it cools, water pushes past air that shouldn't be in the pipe, and a pipe clamped tight against a joist has to move somewhere.
